Fraternalist of the YearTornabene
2007 Faternalist of the Year ~ Vera Tornabene

One hundred years ago in the town of New Philadelphia, Ohio a group of women serving Sacred Heart Church came together and formed an LCBA branch.  Their spirit of community, begun and passed down through the generations, lives on as evidenced by the many Fraternalist of the Year Awards earned by various women of the branch.

It is therefore with a strong sense of tradition that LCBA proudly announces the 2007 Fraternalist of Year, Vera Tornabene, Recorder of Branch 892, New Philadelphia, Ohio.

Born in Wainwright, Ohio, Vera has lived in New Philadelphia and has been a member of Sacred Heart Parish for 68 years.  She is a retired insurance agent of Tuscarawas County AAA where she worked for 35 years.  Mother of three and grandmother of seven, the family gathers for dinner at her home each Tuesday, and she can be found at any church or school event of her grandchildren.

Highly involved in her church, Vera sits on Parish Council, is a member of the Altar Society and attends vicariate meetings of the Diocesan Council of Catholic Women. She also chairs the Welcoming Committee which assists in the transition period for new parishioners, takes her turn in counting Sunday collections, visits ailing parishioners and is a funeral greeter and helps prepare food for funeral luncheons.

Active in Church Women United, Vera is treasurer of this organization and is the representative of Sacred Heart Church.  For their World Day of Prayer, she helped bring people from 16 local churches together at Sacred Heart for readings and a pie reception.

Vera’s effort is felt throughout New Philadelphia as she has worked side by side with her husband of 55 years, Louis, at a pancake sausage breakfast and is a member of the Program Committee of the Sacred Heart Senior Citizens, of which he is president.  She helps with elections as a poll worker and helped with a breakfast served to senior citizens by students of Sacred Heart School.  Vera knows how to have fun too – she is the Queen Mum of the Capello Rossa Chapter of the local Red Hat Society.

“I volunteer because I love people,” Vera says.  “God has been good to me…to share my time…makes me feel that in some small way I’m giving back for his many blessings.”
