Every summer, communities across America will come together for Join Hands Day, a national event that unites young people and adults in an effort to make their neighborhoods better. On this day, these volunteer teams will repair playground equipment, help seniors, remove trash from streets and many more projects. The possibilities are limited only by the imagination. Join Hands Day calls upon you, and all Americans, to reach across generations and work with new friends in identifying and fixing problem conditions right where you live. If you are a young person, get involved, develop your leadership skills and help make important decisions affecting your community. If you are an adult, use your abilities to fix local problems, learn to work effectively with young people and show you care. Sponsored by America's Fraternal Benefit Societies, in Partnership with The Points of Light Foundation and the Volunteer Center National Network. Join Hands Day Sample Project
Scotts Valley High School 555 Glenwood Drive Scotts Valley, California 95066 | What did you do on Join Hands Day? In order to raise money for teacher supplies and to help the environment, we held a recycling demonstration day. We encouraged community members to bring their plastic bottles, glass bottles, aluminum cans and empty printer cartridges to the high school on Join Hands Day instead of putting the recycling on the street for the garbage men to collect. In the span of only three hours from 1-4 pm, community members brought 6,821 bottles and cans up to the high school, surpassing our goal of 1,500 cans and bottles. We then redeemed these recyclables and earned $272 for teacher school supplies. We also received 32 printer ink cartridges, but haven't received a check back and so we can't say how much money we will get. How did your youth and adult groups work together as equal partners in planning the project? The Scotts Valley High School Recycling Club worked with a local environmental organization Ecology Action and the Public School Resource Conservation Program in planning the project. Results The SVHS Recycling Club was chosen for a Join Hands Day Excellence Award. 20 awardees were selected from hundreds of volunteer projects that developed youth and adult partnerships. Each award-winning project received $1,000 and a distinctive glass award. Coordinating groups choose how the funds are used. Some organizations donate the money to the beneficiary of the project or another benevolent cause. Others choose to save it as seed money for next year’s event. Whatever they choose, LCBA is proud to have been a part of such a great group. We want to congratulate them on their tremendous effort.
